There are many reasons to start your own business. I found that the following three are the most important ones in my life. NONE of these 3 reasons to start your own business is based on some brilliant business idea. I do not believe in the success of an idea, I believe in the successful execution of a business idea.

Some reasons can set you up for failure from the start. You have to be clear why you want to start a business because not all reasons are good as I illustrated in my article, 3 reasons you should never ever start a business. But let’s focus on moving you forward in life instead.

1. You want to take control of your income

You realized waiting for a possible raise in salary every year does not give you much control over your financial future. You are at the mercy of others and the greater economy until you decide to take control of your own income and start a business.

2. You realize others cannot change your situation for you

You realized that the company you work for, the government or the greater economy do not take your personal and future needs into account. Just like Jim Rohn said: “If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.” Have you fallen into others life plans? What is your life plan?

3. You want a better life

You realized that you do not get a better life – you have to go and get a better life. You have to become clear on what you want out of life for you and your loved ones. Then you go out and get it. Just like shopping. If you do not know what you need, you cannot buy items in a shop. If you do not know what you want in life, how will you get what you want?

These 3 reasons to start your own business are critical if you want to move forward and create something new in your life. They have served me well over the years. I urge you to sit down with a piece of paper and think about these 3 reasons. Take note of how much control you have over your income, realise how others have changed your life to fit their needs instead of yours and most importantly, what do you want out of life? Remember, you are where you are in life because of your own decisions. Change your decisions and change your life.
